SIP Calculator

Enter your monthly SIP amount, expected return, and duration to see how your investments grow over time. Results are estimates — actual mutual fund returns vary.

SIP returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. Past returns do not guarantee future performance. This calculator shows estimates, not predictions.

Amount invested every month.

Expected CAGR; equity mutual funds have historically returned 10–14% long-term.

How it works

Each monthly SIP instalment is invested for a different number of months. The first instalment earns compound returns for the entire tenure; the last earns nothing. The SIP formula sums the future values of all instalments — it's the geometric series for an annuity due.

Formula

FV = P × [(1+r)^n − 1] / r × (1+r)

Each month's investment earns compound returns for a different number of months — the first instalment earns returns for the entire tenure, and the last earns nothing. The formula sums all these future values.

Worked example

₹5,000/month at 12% for 10 years

Monthly SIP:
₹5,000
Expected return:
12% p.a.
Duration:
10 years

r = 12/12/100 = 0.01 per month, n = 120 months. FV = 5000 × [(1.01)^120 − 1]/0.01 × 1.01 ≈ 5000 × 230.04 ≈ ₹11,50,193. Total invested = ₹6,00,000. Wealth gained ≈ ₹5,50,193.

Limitations

Does not model step-up SIPs (increasing contribution), mid-tenure SIP pause, market volatility, expense ratios, or exit loads.

Frequently asked questions

What return assumption should I use?

Indian equity large-cap funds have historically returned 10–14% CAGR over 10-year periods. Use 10–12% for conservative projections, not 15–18%. Returns are not guaranteed.

What is the difference between SIP and lumpsum?

SIP invests a fixed amount every month, averaging out purchase costs (rupee cost averaging). Lumpsum invests everything at once. SIP reduces timing risk but gives lower returns if markets trend consistently upward.

Can I stop a SIP partway?

Yes, most mutual funds allow you to pause or stop a SIP without penalty. Remaining units continue to grow. This calculator assumes continuous investment for the full tenure.

Does this include expense ratios?

No. Mutual fund expense ratios (typically 0.1%–1.5% for different fund categories) are deducted from returns before NAV is published, so real returns will be lower than the gross rate you enter here.
